Increase comments with the more tag

Will CodeIf you’ve ever read a blog than there are two types of blog homepages you’ve most likely encountered: one with a full post on it and one with a link to continue reading.  You should notice that all the posts here on Easy Fitness Websites contain a link to read the rest of the post.

I do this for a few specific reasons that you can read about in a moment.  Don’t worry though, this doesn’t involve any html coding or high tech php/css work.

If you are using Wordpress than you can use this simple little trick with the click of a button (literally).  But before we talk about how to insert a “more tag” lets talk about some benefits as to why you need to use it.

If you’re whole post is on your homepage, how many pageviews will you get per visitor? One most likely since they don’t have to click anything to read your content.  Pageviews tell search engines that at least someone is looking at something on your site and they might want to figure out what.

Do you have a ton of commentors?  If you don’t than (and even if you do) using the more tag can increase this.  Chances are if you are not using the more tag than the easiness to leave a comment on your site drops 90%.  When someone is on an individual page the comment section is right at the bottom of the post waiting for them when they finish reading.

So lets get into how simple this is to implement.  When you write your post, you do a simple lead in to your post to grab the attention of your reader.  When you come to a spot where they might be hooked, you insert your more tag.  See the image below for what the icon looks like.

Wordpress More Tag

It’s really that simple.  Some things to keep in mind are that you should hit return after your last paragraph before the more tag to put the tag on its own line.  You can see this in the image above.  Otherwise the wording will appear right after the last word in your final paragraph before the more tag.  So it would like this:

and see why even a one legged person can lose weight at Inferno Bootcamp. Click Here To Continue Reading rather than dropping down a line.  Either way is fine, but I prefer to leave a space.

The second easy customization you can do is to create the text for each more tag individually.  When you insert a more tag in Wordpress visual view it looks like above.  If you want to customize the text you have to switch over to html post view.  It will look like this:

More Tag for Wordpress

To customize it, you simply insert a space after -more enter your text and leave a space between your text and the following dashes.  So it will look like this – more Read about the one legged boot camp member –>  Perhaps not that long, but you get the point.  Don’t forget the spaces!

So using the Wordpress more tag is really that simple and if you want to see how a site looks without using it in real time, then check this fitness blog review out – The Naked Dish Nutrition Blog Review.  Are you using the more tag?  Were you previously not and now you are and noticed an increase in comments or pageviews?  Leave a comment below.

Thanks for this quick tutorial. I was wondering how I could change the standard “click to continue” text that kept showing up when I was using this.

Well that’s a lot easier than I thought. I figured you’d need some sort of plugin or custom theme to customize the more tag. Another good one.
